In the midst of planning our wedding and building a small business, my fiancé and I got the urge to book a ticket somewhere. Living in South Florida gives us quick access to the Caribbean and Cuba happens to be our closest neighbor. Always fascinated by the history and culture that is geographically so close but has felt exponentially far away, Gordon decided it would be fun to surprise me with an April Fool’s getaway. He obviously (and thankfully) couldn’t keep the trip a secret, so I put my planning skills to use and reserved a centrally-located AirBnB, preparing to immerse ourselves in the Cuban lifestyle for four days. Completely disconnected with no internet access or way of communicating to anyone in the states, we embraced being offline and made meaningful connections with the local people. We were ‘Havana’ really good time in Cuba just taking in the sights and wandering through the old city, on a search for the perfect mojito.
Our private apartment came equipped with a scenic balcony and gracious hosts downstairs, Enna and her family showed us the Cuban hospitality by cooking breakfast for us every morning as well as arranging our transportation and dinner reservations. David was our adorable bicycle taxi driver, who introduced us to his family and took us out Salsa dancing. Our experience was rich in color from the people to the architecture and cars, it was like traveling back in time to a faraway land that still felt familiar. Reminiscent of a European city, yet vibrant with latin influence and a revolutionary past, Cuba left a place in my heart and a mark on my memory.
